On My Radar 2.2.24

We are managing to beat the winter blues fairly well this month I think; we tried our hand at Axe Throwing, a quick trip to the Dooly’s for a few games of pool, and I started some seeds! I am stalking Costco’s garden section waiting to see if Hydrangeas are going to make the garden list this year, fingers crossed! But here are a few other things that peaked my interest the past couple weeks!

  1. Forest River 44View Destination Trailer

I mentioned in a previous post that while ‘tiny home’ living has certainly been worth it, I am sorely missing a real kitchen and being able to do laundry in our own home. Last summer we went to check out the 42view & I’m even more excited for the newer model. Fingers crossed it will be at the Ottawa RV Show this weekend Feb (2-4th).

  2. The Self-Sufficiency Garden: Feed Your Family & Save Money

If you haven’t heard of Huw Richards yet I’d head over to Youtube and check him out asap! I started watching him because he actually garden’s in Wales, where my family is traditionally from and I was interested to see what my heritage grew from. Fast forward & I’m so in love with his gardening technique and the fact that he did the same harvest & measure system in his own garden. His new book is in pre-release and signed copies are available on his website!

  3. Dogtra- Pathfinder Dog Tracking Collar

I looked for ages for a tracking collar for Brody that was able to set an irregular fence perimeter, could correct, and didn’t have a monthly subscription fee. It does have a bit of an initial purchase price but honestly, I love having the peace of mind that it’s bought and paid for. It is not internet based so you must stay within 14 km of your dog in order to track them and you must be connected through the app but it’s perfect for on the farm and Brody is currently being trained to stay on-farm while I make quick jaunts into town running errands. This way I know he’s safe while he helps keep the chickens safe over the summer months.

  4. Pelleting Machine

Ok, so hear me out because I had no idea these things were a thing! What if I take the ‘food powder’ from the FoodCycler and turn it into food pellets for the chickens?! Obv. not as a complete feed, as it wouldn’t be fully balanced, but as a supplementary feed?? Or what about using hay to make rabbit feed for over the winter?? I am probably way too excited for what it is, but I think it is such a great idea!

  5. Tree Guilds

I came across the idea of tree guilds when trying to plan for the orchard. I knew I already wanted to incorporate the fruit trees into a functional esthetic garden but I had no idea there was already an established process for this. The idea being that you plant different varieties around the tree to help repel pests, attract pollinators, act as ground cover to help retain moisture and to build up the soils nutrients.
